Structuring projects functionally:

The systematic development of more complex products and systems within a project team requires effective and efficient planning. This is where methodological foundations are needed which support the problem solving process in an effective way. For this purpose, the planning methodology «Systems Engineering» was developed at the ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) at the beginning of the 1970s. Its aim is to support project teams particularly in structuring demanding projects. Hence, Systems Engineering is still part of the range of courses offered at many academic institutions of higher education in Switzerland and abroad.

The methodology «Systems Engineering» has been developed further and adapted to current requirements by Rainer Züst. Particular consideration has been given to dealing with socio-technical systems, interconnectedness as well as the time factor. For this reason, a textbook has been published, which conveys the most important principles and objectives; these are further clarified by simple phrases and illustrative examples. Further to this, eight examples of planning have been reviewed and published as a case book; these varied examples illustrate the concrete applications of Systems Engineering in everyday planning.
